Introducing Juniper Sling, an intoxicating new luxury fragrance created by fine British perfumery Penhaligon's. Inspired by the most iconic and atmospheric of spirits, London Dry Gin, this unisex fragrance was created for Penhaligon's by master perfumer Olivier Cresp (and Thierry Hernandez, director of the bar at Plaza Athénée Hotel in Paris). Juniper Sling is a playful, chilled and mysterious homage to the Bright Young Things of London's roaring twenties.
For enigmatic boys and girls, Juniper Sling is a crisp cocktail shot of gin with the freshness of juniper, cool measures of angelica and brandy and a beating libertine heart of black pepper, cardamom, soft leather and orris. A gourmand base of brown sugar, black cherry and amber add sensuality to this luxury fragrance. A beloved and iconic tipple has been transformed into a complex and compulsive scent. The opening of Juniper Sling is dazzling and spicy thanks to notes of orange, juniper berry, brandy and cinnamon. The heart of this woody, spicy and musky fragrance reveals a combination of cardamom, leather, woods and pepper. The very ambrox-inflected trail blends vetiver with sweeter notes, like cherry. It is also Olivier Cresp's first foray in the realm of niche perfumery, a notable fact when you know that the man specializes in large-scale perfumery, having created blockbusters like Angel by Thierry Mugler or more recently Kokorico by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Smelling Juniper Sling at first is like inhaling the vapors of a gin followed by fruitier accents. There you have your sling as it ought to be : a sweet citrusy gin. What let you know this is no cocktail but a perfume are two clues : it soon smells like a sottish version of a cologne and there is an ambergris-cedar-y base which appears fast on the heels of the initial accord... and that blend has yet to be integrated into an index of cocktail recipes. What Juniper Sling is not, is an atmospheric, evocative and images-rich scent. And so while Penhaligon's has been inspired by the atmosphere of the speakeasies during the jazz age in London (check the funny video below), I cannot say that I feel transported to that era or those places just by smelling the fragrance, although this is eminently possible as some scent compositions have proven.
The playful 'mock-umentary' has been created to celebrate the launch of Juniper Sling and takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the 'Juniper Sling effect' in action; young ladies wafting the fragrance become flappers, the famous short hairstyles of the 1920s are attributed to the gin inspired scent, scandalous parties abound and its aphrodisiac properties cause a baby boom ! It's not long until the government is forced to act; Juniper Sling is banned !
