ToBeFrank is an all-British menswear label that has been inspired by the real gentleman. Combining the different classes and the different lifestyles to create a wardrobe for the strong-minded and the hard-working, bringing back the masculine practicality, fabric, shape and over all image. This honest brand is celebrating the life of the past and the men of the future, creating a sharp look to menswear that has been lost to the feminine shapes and soft silhouettes. Every garment is handmade in England, jackets, trousers and shirts are made in London, and jumpers are hand-sheered, hand-spun and hand-knitted in Malton, Yorkshire by an amazing shepherdess and wonderful lady, Sue Wiles. Each piece is sold with a USB swing tag which shows the customer how their garment has been made and by whom.
Born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, designer Frank Phillips -a woman- studied fashion at Huddersfield University. She went onto intern at Anna Sui in New York, then at Topman. In June 2011, she started her label ToBeFrank, inspired by her life experiences of opposing class backgrounds and intent on creating a trustworthy brand that encapsulates the needs of today's modern man. And inspired by Charles Dickens novels, the original gentleman and the branches of her family tree which are a beautiful blend of upper and middle class lifestyles, her designs are rooted in romanticism and abstract expression, charmingly translated in this first collection with models wearing contemporary trench-inspired coats, tailored wool and velvet trousers, shirts with dismantled asymmetrical collars, and traditional chunky knits, each carrying a bouquet of red roses to finish the look. Double-breasted jackets were shown in maroon alongside fluid silk-mix pants, whilst parkas were given an elegant twist with longer backs resembling formal tailcoats. Frank Phillips updated her designs with finer details such as double collars on variedly colored shirts and bright neon bands encompassing trouser hemlines, adding an understated modern edge to this nice collection.
